For the first time in history, the City of Cape Coral will proclaim February 2nd as “Ground-Owl Day.”
Free and open to the public, Cape Coral’s inaugural “Ground-Owl Day” will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Rotary Community Garden located just north of City Hall at the corner of Cultural Park Boulevard and SE 10th Street. Mayor Coviello will issue the official proclamation and the winner of the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife “Name the Owl” contest will be announced. (See below for details.)
In addition, everyone in attendance will be anxious to see whether the “Ground-Owl” will see his shadow, thus signaling 6 more weeks of beautiful “winter weather” in Cape Coral!
Punxsutawney may have “Phil” for their Groundhog Day but Cape Coral is going to have it’s own special “Ground-Owl” Day mascot!
Want to help name the owl? If so, think of some cool names and enter them in the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife “Name the Owl” contest! To enter the contest, please email your owl name ideas to NameThatOwl@gmail.com NO LATER THAN JANUARY 20, 2019 and be sure to include your name and telephone number. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries.
On the evening of Saturday, February 2, plan to join the City’s Special Events team at Jaycee Park (4215 SE 20th Place) for a FREE “Movie in the Park” featuring a special showing of the movie “Hoot” (co-sponsored by the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife) on a large inflatable movie screen.
Food trucks and the Cape Coral Fun-Mobile will be at Jaycee Park starting at 5pm, and rumor has it the Burrowing Owl mascot will be available for photo opps before the movie! Bring your own chairs and blankets. The movie will begin at dusk (~6:30pm).
WHOOOOOO would want to miss all this fun?!?

Come check out the Market at the Moose every first Saturday of the month. Indoor/Outdoor market. A variety of vendors, local fresh produce, baked goods, breakfast sandwiches and lunch, gourmet spices, custom jewelry, homemade items, art, crafts & more! Open to the public!! Vendors vary each month. You never know what you’ll find at the market!

The largest of all Edison Ford car shows, this one will feature more than 100 antique cars from local car clubs and classic car owners. The cars will exhibit on Henry Ford’s lawn, along the Caloosahatchee River. This family-friendly event offers something for everyone. Car owners will be on hand to answer questions about their cars, a DJ will provide entertainment and food will be available for purchase. Come on out and see the antique cars, get something to eat, enjoy some great music – and see what’s new in the museum and gardens! A portion of the proceeds will benefit the restoration of the antique car collection at Edison Ford.
The deadline for car owners to pre-register is January 30. Pre-registration is $20 for one car and $10 for each additional car. This includes admission into Edison Ford for the registered participant and one passenger.

Art Fest will be on the waterfront in downtown Fort Myers. Always during the first weekend in February, Art Fest enlivens the Fort Myers waterfront with art, entertainment, vendors and children’s art activities. There will be original art by more than 200 artists which you’ll get to meet the artists, face-to-face. There will also be food and drink vendors with items available for purchase.

The cost is just $20 per tent; however, limited riverfront sites are available.
Check in between 2-4pm on Saturday and kids activities will begin at 3pm. There are a limited number of “premium” camp sites under the trees along the riverfront available. Once those sites are filled, there will be other spaces available out in the park; however, there are no picnic tables or grills at those sites. Advance registration is required.

The City of Cape Coral Parks and Recreation department is excited to bring you a FREE “Movie in the Park” on our giant inflatable screen! Enjoy a free family night out under the stars! Bring a blanket and chairs. Movie starts when the sun goes down. Sunset is approximately 6:15pm, but get there early for a good spot, activities, s’mores and giveaways!
Based on the eponymous novel by Carl Hiaasen, “Hoot” is set in a fictitious Florida Gulf Coast town modeled after Cape Coral and its population of burrowing owls. Much of it was filmed in Boca Grande.
The world’s largest population of burrowing owls resides in Cape Coral, Florida, where an estimated 2,000 pairs of birds are protected and preserved by the non-profit Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife group, a volunteer organization dedicated to “preserving and enhancing the habitat of protected wildlife species and educating the community about its natural resources.”
