Annual March in the Park
March 9, 2019 at Jaycee Park
The Garden Club of Cape Coral holds our annual major fundraiser for the year on March 9th, 2019. There will be plants for sale, arts and crafts, gardening demonstrations and fun activities for the kits. Other vendors may sell products/services and sponsorships are welcome. The proceeds enable us to give scholarships to several local high school students and donate to local schools who have school gardens run by their students. We also use some of the proceeds in support of the Butterfly Garden at Rotary Park in memory of members who have passed on.
There are many ways you can contribute including preparing plants, making plant identification sticks, donating plant pots and plants, volunteering on the day, etc.
A good source for plants to donate is to look for growing volunteers in your yard. If you have anything you think would be good, please contact Dona Baliotis. Especially new members, please talk to Dona first about any ideas. And remember, just because you don’t think a plant is particularly special it may be desirable to others. Sign up sheets are at the monthly meeting or contact Dona Baliotis.

The Fort Myers Beach Lions Club Shrimp Festival is the largest 2-day event on Estero Island! The 61st annual festival begins at 10am Saturday, March 9th with a 2 mile parade marching down Fort Myers Beach’s main thoroughfare, Estero Blvd. The parade will travel from the Fort Myers Beach Elementary School to Lynn Hall Memorial Park next to Time Square. After the parade, the Lion’s Club will be offering its famous shrimp dinners, featuring locally caught wild shrimp from the Fort Myers Beach shrimp fleet. Over 100 vendors with arts and crafts, food, gifts, jewelry, clothing will also be on site.
There will also be the 5th annual Shrimp Eating Contest on Sunday, March 10th at 1pm! It will be held inside the expo grounds at Lynn Hall Park. The contest will feature up to 10 sponsored contestants who will compete to eat as many pounds of cooked and peeled Ft. Myers Beach Pink Shrimp within 8 minutes. Contestants will be aided by assistants who will divvy out the shrimp to them in pre-weighed portions. Whoever eats the most within the eight minutes wins! Also up for grabs is “People’s Choice.” This ranking is won by collecting $1 donations from the crowd for the contestant with their vote to win. Will King Joel, Fort Myers Beach Firefighter win again or will it be a newcomer with something fresh to bring to the table? The Lions Club is actively seeking participants and sponsors. Sponsorships are $250 with all proceeds to Lions Charities. Shrimp will be provided by the Ft. Myers Beach Shrimping Fleet.
